Post-Operative Instructions
Each patient's post-operative instructions will be customized for their particular situation.
- Bite on gauze for two hours. If the bleeding continues, bite on fresh, sterile gauze for an additional hour. Repeat if necessary.
- Do not rinse or wash the mouth today; however, continue to maintain basic oral hygiene. Brush all nonsurgery areas. Tomorrow, soak with warm salt water 6 to 8 times per day. Do not swish. Avoid "sucking" actions such as with straws.
- NO SMOKING for five days following surgery. It significantly impairs healing.
- Eat and drink on the opposite side of the mouth for 24 hours, if possible, or as directed otherwise by Dr. Wells or his staff.
- Swelling is not uncommon and need not cause alarm. To minimize, apply an ice bag, or a towel filled with cracked ice over the affected area as long as possible for the next 24 hours. Take only liquid nourishment while you are numb.
- Mild to moderate discomfort may be experienced after the anesthetic wears off. Take the medication as prescribed for discomfort.
- Keep petroleum jelly or similiar emollient applied to the lips regularly to prevent chafing.
- If deemed appropriate a postoperative follow up appointment will be provided for you.
